Americas Media Initiative
Alex Halkin, Director

Americas Media Initiative's (AMI) mission is to produce, distribute and screen film and video made in the Americas by community media organizations and independent filmmakers. Through screenings at universities, cultural institutions, community media centers and film festivals their goal is to broaden the U.S. audience’s understanding of issues faced by marginalized populations and encourage further investigation through cultural exchange.

Since their founding in 2010, AMI has consistently done groundbreaking work in Cuba; organizing the Closing Distances documentary film tours in the Cuban provinces with renowned cultural institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and the documentary PBS series POV. Since 2011, AMI has invited 11 Cuban filmmakers to the U.S. and distributed close to 800 DVDs of Cuban independent and community media to more than 70 universities. AMI currently has 12 films in its Cuba DVD catalogue, a collaboration with Icarus Films in New York.

Alexandra Halkin is AMI’s founder and director, a documentary filmmaker, and founder in the 1990’s of the Chiapas Media Project. Alexandra is a Guggenheim and Fulbright fellow and the producer of a number of award winning short human rights focused documentaries made in Mexico. Alexandra is currently developing the Cuban Documentary Film Fund
that will support Cuban documentary filmmakers in Cuba.
