Maestra Film
Catherine Murphy, Producer and Director

In 1961, 250,000 Cubans volunteered to teach there on a National Campaign for Literacy. Thousands of them were under 18 years old and over half of them were women. Maestra explores this story through the personal testimonies of the young women who went out to teach literacy in rural communities across the island - and found themselves deeply transformed in the process.

Catherine Murphy spent the 1990s in Cuba, working with and researching the birthing urban garden movement. An early version of her MA thesis was published by Food First under the title of "Cultivating Havana". Her subsequent work has largely focused on social documentaries, including her film Maestra on the 1961 Cuban Literacy Campaign.
