Richard McCarthy was a co-founder of the Crescent City Farmers Market in New Orleans in 1995. As its director, he also led Market Umbrella, a nonprofit “mentor” organization that advises 1,250 public markets on working with farmers, shoppers, chefs, communities and regulatory officials. He served as a founding President for the Farmers Market Coalition, the national voice for farmers markets, which contributed to the development of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farmers Market Promotion Program, yielding $32 million over seven years to farmers market innovation and professionalism.
